Toyota Earns 11 IIHS 2018 Safety Awards

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released its top vehicle safety picks for 2018.

Toyota, Hyundai, and Subaru were among the brands that ranked highest in the ratings overall, although BMW and Mercedes-Benz also had several models on the list.

Another 47 vehicles earned the Top Safety Pick designation, where Toyota had 10 vehicle models, with Hyundai recognized for nine models.

Subaru had the most Safety Pick+ vehicles.

Tillerson says Ukraine is biggest obstacle to normal Russian Federation ties
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said worldwide sanctions and pressure on North Korea will remain the policy until the regime gives up its nuclear program.

The Insurance Institute For Highway Safety says it's raising the bar for automakers, creating tougher test criteria to make sure vehicles can protect people in crashes and do more to help prevent crashes that can injure or kill. Six out of seven in Subaru's 2018 lineup earned the award with the Impreza, Legacy, Outback, and WRX netting Top Safety Pick+ when outfitted with optional front-crash prevention and specific headlights. This year, a new test was included - simulating what happens when the front corner of the passenger's side smacks into a tree or pole. Mercedes Benz, Subaru, Toyota and Ford also had models listed as top safety picks. The list doesn't include any minivans, pickups or minicars, which don't appear on either list of awardees.

The Kia Forte sedan was awarded a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS.

"We've been doing small overlap frontal crash tests on the driver's side since 2012 and we've seen a lot of improvement on that side, but we weren't seeing that kind of improvement for passengers, said IIHS president Adrian Lund". "Manufacturers have been taking this issue seriously since we first shed light on it, and we're confident that good small overlap protection will become the norm on the passenger side, just as it has on the driver side". Check out the full list of models that qualify. However, IIHS notes that the vast majority of the award-winners qualify only when optionally equipped because front crash prevention systems and acceptable or good headlights aren't often part of the base trims.
