Trump Jr grilled in Congress as Russian Federation probe steps up

NBC News reported Tuesday that, in recent written testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee, Veselnitskaya said Trump Jr had asked her in the June 2016 meeting for evidence of illegal donations to the foundation of former president Bill Clinton, the husband of Trump's Democratic election rival Hillary Clinton. Despite intense scrutiny of the campaign's ties to Russia, Trump Jr. and the other officials kept the meeting secret for more than a year until news of the gathering broke last July.

"To the extent they had information concerning the fitness, character or qualifications of a presidential candidate, I believed that I should at least hear them out", he said when he met with the Senate Judiciary Committee in September.

Donald Trump Jr. and Kushner have said Veselnitskaya had no such damaging information.

Congressional investigators also want to question Trump Jr. about his communication in the fall of 2016 with a Twitter account run by WikiLeaks.

In emails pitching Trump Jr. on the meeting, Goldstone said Veselnitskaya was able to provide the Trump campaign with "some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary (Clinton) and her dealings with Russian Federation".

The meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya was arranged by publicist Rob Goldstone, who had originally told Trump Jr. through an exchange of emails that the meeting would be with a "Russian government attorney", who would discuss "Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump".

Veselnitskaya said there was no discussion at the Trump Tower meeting of hacked or leaked emails, social media campaigns or any of the other main aspects of Russian interference in the US election. After Veselnitskaya said she didn't, she says Trump Jr. apparently lost interest in the meeting. Trump, a billionaire, is the richest US president ever, although some analysts have questioned whether Trump's assets total $10 billion as he claims.

A USA official with knowledge of Mueller's probe, according to Reuters, said one reason for the subpoenas was to find out whether the bank may have sold some of Trump's mortgage or other loans to Russian state development bank VEB or other Russian banks that now are under us and European Union sanctions.

Veselnitskaya states she was there to talk about America's Magnitsky Act.

The report comes less than a month after the publicist, Rob Goldstone, said in an interview with The Sunday Times that he was "keen to talk" with special counsel Robert Mueller's team, which is investigating possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

Donald Trump Jr., the president's oldest son, is set to be interviewed privately by the House Intelligence Committee on Wednesday following disclosures that Democrats say must be explored in the probe of possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation before the 2016 election.

Mr. Trump engaged in several private message exchanges with WikiLeaks just before it released emails hacked from Mrs. Clinton's campaign Chairman John Podesta.

Jay Sekulow, President Trump's lawyer, denies that Mueller had subpoenaed any of the president's financial records.

The committee meeting was conducted behind closed doors, and Trump Jr. was not seen by reporters waiting outside the meeting room, although congressional officials confirmed he had arrived.

However, Deutsche Bank appears to be acknowledging there has been a related request, saying it "takes its legal obligations seriously and remains committed to cooperating with authorized investigations into this matter".
