UPS Shipping, Delivery Delays Follow Huge Cyber Monday Sales

United Parcel Service said on Tuesday some deliveries were being delayed because of a surge in holiday online shopping orders during the peak shipping period.

UPS, which handles deliveries for numerous biggest retailers including Amazon.com Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Macy's Inc., is adding one or two days in transit time on an unspecified number of deliveries following record sales around Cyber Monday, spokesman Steve Gaut said Tuesday.

Much of the backlog is already cleared, and UPS doesn't expect to miss Christmas deadlines because of it, Gaut said. Gaut said the company had reassigned about 400 back-office workers to sorting facilities and delivery routes and rented more trucks to deal with the "bubble" in deliveries.

During peak season this year, UPS expects to process almost double its normal average daily volume of more than 19 million packages and documents, O'Connor said. (UPS) drivers deliver packages on Cyber Monday in NY, U.S., on Monday, Nov. 30, 2015. News of the delays at Atlanta-based UPS was reported earlier by the Wall Street Journal.

UPS predicts that it will deliver 750 million packages between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That figure is up more than 5% from 2016, when UPS handled 712 million packages during the holiday season. "We have shifted more employees and other resources to these markets to address this Cyber Week surge and expect to have the issue resolved by midweek, this week". Amazon by itself saw its largest sale ever recently.

In addition, UPS told over 100 delivery centers in areas that have high demand that their drivers might be requested to work more hours until January 5, including as many as 70 hours over a period of eight days. The extension is up from 60 hours over seven days.

The UPS spokesperson said the company was taking every necessary step to ensure it is serving the demand of its customers especially during the current holiday rush. "This is, after all, the third consecutive year in which cyber Monday purchases have overwhelmed the Company's capacity to deliver packages for the holidays".
