Women's Shelter hosting event to honour victims of Montreal Massacre

Victims of violence are also gathering at Barrie city hall on Wednesday night for a ceremony and to remember the Dec.6, 1989 massacre.

In 2014, the Winnipeg native organized a memorial service at the University of Manitoba to mark the 25th anniversary of the Dec 6. tragedy.

In recent years, she says the school has worked to transform the anniversary - and the symbol of the white rose - into something positive.

Women between the ages of 15 and 24 experience the highest rates of violence, with Indigenous women more than three times as likely to report being a victim of spousal violence as non-Indigenous woman. A victim, her mother says, of someone with a violent past who targeted women.

She sees the award as a way to both honour their memories and celebrate the progress that has been made since then.

"They're stepping up and recognizing that gender-based violence is not okay", Keefer said.

She said that almost three decades after the mass murder it's still hard to cope with the aftermath of the shooting.

The award was given out days ahead of the 28th anniversary of the Polytechnique massacre on December 6. Deputy premier Dominique Anglade, Mayor Valerie Plante and Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, the wife of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, are scheduled to attend.

"You question yourself: as a woman, do I have my place in the world, do I have to be scared of choosing an area, a type of work, a career?" Today we honour and remember the victims of this atrocious crime.

"It needs to be on people's minds every day, so that we can come towards change and work towards some meaningful change", Strong-Garcia said.
