Firefighters Battling 'Hurricane-Force' Winds in Creek Fire

Two major fires raged in Southern California Tuesday, including the Creek Fire near Sylmar.

Sheriff's officials did not provide an update on the number of residents who remained evacuated, but on Thursday about 250,000 people were under evacuation orders. Nearly 1,700 firefighters and other personnel were deployed Thursday against the fire, which was 10 percent contained. The other 10 homes were within Los Angeles city limits, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department. "And they were like, 'Get out, get out, get out, '" Patricia Padilla told the newspaper. Although numerous homes were charred on Tuesday, firefighters were still dousing hot spots that flared up on Thursday morning. Numerous first responders including the Los Angeles City Fire Department, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the U.S. Forestry Department were sent to the scene. An estimated 2,500 homes had already been evacuated.

LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas warned that the battle was likely to continue until at least Friday.

The Los Angeles Police Department, meanwhile, was on a citywide tactical alert, which allows commanders maximum flexibility in deploying resources. The Creek Fire grew to over 4,000 acres by Tuesday afternoon as hundreds of firefighters were deployed to push back the flames.

He said he had a "close relationship" with Suleyman Aslan, who was Halkbank's general manager and Atilla's superior until 2013. Earlier on Thursday, a lawyer for Atilla, Cathy Fleming, sought through cross-examination to undermine Zarrab's credibility.

As the fire expanded and jumped south of the Foothill Freeway on Tuesday, so did the mandatory evacuation area.

That zones hugs Foothill Boulevard and stretches for approximately 15 miles from Sylmar to Crescenta Highlands. A map of now evacuated areas and shelters can be found here.

The communities of Kagel Canyon, Lakeview Terrace, Sunland, Sylmar, Pacoima, Lopez Canyon and Shadow Hills also were under evacuation orders. The fire also forced a mass evacuation of large animals, primarily horses but also others such as alpacas. One of those horses, named Chaparra, suffered the most severe burn injuries and is being treated at Pierce College around the clock.
