Pantone names Ultra Violet its 2018 Color of the Year

Next year, everything's gonna be purple.

No word of politics in Pantone's 2018 selection, however.

Behr Paint suggests King's Court as a paint color that corresponds to Ultra Violet, Pantone's 2018 Color of the Year.

When it comes to interior design and home decorating, Pantone's colour of the year plays a hugely influential role in dictating trends for the year to come.

More than merely a colour swatch, there are social and political messages embedded in Pantone's colour of the year, whether it be 2017's focus on sustainability and the environment represented in "Greenery" to 2016's dual colours of "Rose Quartz" and "Serenity" celebrating the rise of gender fluidity.

Starbucks Launches New Christmas Tree Frappuccino For The Holiday Season
Devoid of the edible ornaments, the drink just looks like a regular mocha Frappuccino with a faintly green whipped topping. The whipped cream is topped with caramel drizzle, candied cranberries, and a dried strawberry "tree topper".

In an interview with The New York Times, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, called it "the most complex of all colors, because it takes two shades that are seemingly diametrically opposed-blue and red-and brings them together to create something new".

More than just a color, Pantone's Color of the Year seems to be making a cultural statement.

The shade was used often on runways during 2018 Fashion Week, People noted. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality.

The Pantone Color Institute is the consulting arm within Pantone that forecasts global color trends, advises companies on color in brand identity and product development, and on color assurance programs. Nuanced and full of emotion, the depth of PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.
