SC fires its offensive coordinator ahead of Outback Bowl

"After much deliberation, I have made a decision to go in a different direction with the offensive coordinator position on our football team", Muschamp said.

Roper had an in-home visit with Joyner last week, but early Wednesday morning, head coach Will Muschamp announced Roper was not going to be retained.

University of SC co-offensive coordinator Kurt Roper has been let go by the football team, USC athletics confirmed in a news release.

Muschamp said in his statement he will not name a new quarterbacks coach and play caller until after the Outback Bowl on January 1.

The Gamecocks had a worse offense than MI did this season, finishing No. 109 in the country in total offense (340.2 yards per game). That's 14.7 yards fewer than MI, which checked in at No. 101. Charlie Weis, Brent Pease and now Roper have run offenses at Florida and SC under Muschamp without lasting more than two years.

On the scoreboard, they're averaging 24.1 points per game, good for 98th in the country.

Roper was also the offensive coordinator under Muschamp at Florida before taking a job with the Cleveland Browns as the senior offensive assistant coach.

But much like the Wolverines, this SC team is young.

He was also Arian Foster's running back coach at Tennessee and Thad Lewis' coach at Duke.
