Stabbing at Tokyo shrine leaves 3 people dead

An apparent murder-suicide involving a samurai sword at a Tokyo religious shrine has left the head priestess dead, along with her assailant brother and his girlfriend.

Police believe Nagako Tomioka was killed by her brother, while the accomplice attacked Tomioka's driver.

The Times says authorities suspect a dispute between the brother and sister over the Shinto shrine's chief priest position.

Nagako Tomioka's driver, 33, was also seriously injured in the attack.

Founded in 1627, Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine is located about 300 meters from Tokyo Metro's Monzen-Nakacho Station.

The four were sent to a hospital, where the three were confirmed dead.

Shigenaga Tomioka, 56, and an accomplice were hiding behind her house, police said.

Shigenaga's partner, meanwhile, chased down his sister's driver, who had tried to escape on foot, and attacked him about 100 meters away. At a spot about 100 meters away from the auto, she slashed his right shoulder, leaving him with a non-life-threatening injury.

After slashing the priestess, Shigenaga then stabbed the younger woman to death with a sword before killing himself, police said.

A knife and a Japanese sword with blood on were found later near the site.

According to an acquaintance of a family member, Shigenaga was the chief priest of the shrine until he was dismissed about 10 years ago.

At the time, his sister had held a post known as negi, the second-highest rank at a Shinto shrine after the chief priest.

The assailant, identified as 56-year-old Shigenaga Tomioka, attacked his 58-year-old sister sister Nagako Tomioka, the shrine's chief priestess, with a Samurai sword and killed her after she got off from a chauffeur-driven auto.
