IDF strikes Hamas targets in Gaza in response to rockets

Civilian homes were damaged in a series of Israeli air strikes against Hamas targets in Gaza early on Thursday, as the Israeli military announced it would close border crossings between the blockaded Palestinian territory and Israel.

"The military facilities were used as training and weapons storage compounds", the statement said.

The Army said Israel will not permit any attempt to harm its citizens and continue to safeguard its sovereignty.

Palestinian resistance movement Hamas held a rally in Gaza City on Thursday to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its establishment.

One rocket workshop was also said to have been completely destroyed in a strike on Friday evening at the Al Liwaa outpost controlled by the al-Qassam Brigades in northern Gaza.

Airstrikes hit sites in northwestern and southern Gaza City, as well as near the Deir al-Balah beach in the central Gaza Strip.

Kulbhushan Jadhav case: Pakistan to submit its reply to ICJ
In a reaction to the move, Pakistan's relations with neighbouring India tensed, and New Delhi approached the ICJ to hear the case. Jadhav had filed an appeal with Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa to seek clemency, which is still pending.

Born out of the first Palestinian uprising, or Intifada, in 1987, Hamas was created in response to Israel's illegal occupation of West Bank and the Gaza strip.

But faced with global condemnation they struggled to govern effectively, Ahmed Youssef, a former Hamas official, told Al Jazeera.

Gaza militants have fired rockets into israel daily following President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital last week.

Israel has occupied East Quds since the 1967 Middle East war. Hamas, however, wants to set up an Islamic state between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean, which includes Israel.

Under its new political chief Ismail Haniyeh, who took over from Meshaal, Hamas has giving political control of Gaza back to the Palestinian Authority, a move prompted by pressure from the PA and Egypt, which resulted in a reconciliation deal in October. In recent days, rolling blackouts lasted for 24 hours, followed by four hours of electricity.
