Lasith Malinga plays domestic game after being 'rested' from the national side

Lasith Malinga has been left out of the 15-man squad for the upcoming three-match Twenty20 global series against India, Sri Lanka Cricket announced on Friday (December 15).

Last week, Malinga had left the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) early due to personal reasons, despite his team Rangpur Riders playing the final.

Malinga, who has also not been included in the ongoing ODI series against India, has been struggling with his global form since returning from ankle surgery in 2015. All-rounder Dasun Shanaka and fast bowler Vishwa Fernando have been brought in for the T20I series. The board in their press release said that they have rested 34-year-old Malinga for the series against India. The T20 squad also includes left-arm spinners Sachith Pathirana, Chaturanga de Silva and lone specialist spinner Akila Dananjaya.

Since leaving the Motor City, the aging back spent time with both the San Francisco 49ers (2015) and the Buffalo Bills (2016). The former first-round pick is well aware that older running backs don't have a great track record of success in today's NFL .

Mathews, who suffered cramps during his unbeaten century in the second ODI in Mohali on December 13, bowled and batted as the Sri Lanka cricket team hit the ground running by taking part in a training session on Friday.

Speaking to reporters, the selectors insisted that the former T20I captain had been rested and not dropped, along with Suranga Lakmal, Sri Lanka's best fast bowler on the tour of India so far.

Perera who had a good start to his captaincy career after the visitors bundled out India for 112 and later clinched victory by 7 wickets in Dharamsala would lead the side.
