Homework assignment asked students for 3 'good,' 3 bad reasons for slavery

A private Wisconsin elementary school is reportedly apologizing for a homework assignment that asked fourth-graders to list "good" reasons for slavery alongside "bad" ones.

"On behalf of Our Redeemer Lutheran School, we sincerely apologize for the fact that an assignment given to a fourth-grade class yesterday was not clearly explained to students and their parents".

In a letter to parents, Van Dellen wrote: "The objective of the assignment was not, in any way, to have students argue that slavery is acceptable". I couldn't believe they sent something like that home, ' parent Trameka Brown-Berry, who has a nine-year-old son in the class, told Click2Houston. The letter was shared thousands of times on Facebook and quickly provoked anger on Twitter as well. He then followed his response with his three bad reasons, which included, "biting them", "splitting them up from family members", and "making them do your chores and work when it's your job".

Principal Jim Van Dellen declined to speak with FOX6 News on camera, but admitted Tuesday the assignment was out of line.

Trameka Brown-Berry (pictured) said "It's highly offensive and insensitive".

Brown-Berry was the one who originally posted the assignment online and doesn't regret drawing a firestorm of media attention to the school and the community. It prompted an apology from the principal of Our Redeemer Lutheran School, who said the question wasn't supposed to have an answer because there are no good reasons for slavery. She also demanded the assignment be removed from all current and future curriculums and that school must first inform parents before raising controversial topics.

A homework assignment at a Wauwatosa school has sparked backlash.

"I wanted to model for him what it means to voice your opinion and stand up for yourself and stand up for what's right". The principal agreed to all of these, she said. "With all of your support I was able to give my child a personal life lesson about how change starts with you".

While Brown-Berry is satisfied with the steps she and the school are taking to ensure that something like this never happens again, she doesn't regret sharing her original post.

The teacher in question has not been identified and it is unclear if the teacher was disciplined or not.
