'I'm getting better,' El-Zakzaky tells journalists in Abuja

The Department of State Services officials in a bid to clear the air on Friday stated that El-Zakzaky was alive and hale and hearty.

Head of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), popularly known as Shiite group, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky spoke to the Nigerian media Saturday afternoon.

He walked towards the journalist in a white flowing gown with turban. The journalists moved towards him.

Reacting separately, he said the bullet in El-Zakzaky's wife's body is yet to be removed.

"For us, Nigeria must remain peaceful, stable and trust in the government and security agencies to provide the enabling environment to allow residents, citizens and everyone as far as you are law abiding to pursue their legitimate businesses".

Speaking briefly at the DSS facility in Abuja, yesterday El- Zakzaky said his health condition has improved and thanked the security agents for the kind treatment being extended to him.

El-Zakzaky's lawyer, Mr.Femi Falana (SAN), also confirmed that he is alive although seriously ill.

The cleric and his wife had sustained gunshot wounds during their arrests. "But he is very sick", Mr. Falana said.

"He has lost an eye; he is in the process of losing the other one".

Members of the IMN group have been staging series of processions across the northern states demanding their release.

The rumoured death had culminated in members of his sect staging protests on the streets of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja and Kaduna, with police using teargas to disperse them and arresting some of the protesters.
