Trump chose to extend sanction relief for Iran

Although he will uphold the agreement by waiving sanctions targeting Iran's access to the global financial system, Trump is also expected to reinstate sanctions targeting Iranian firms and individuals that were scrapped as part of the 2015 nuclear deal, AP, citing six people briefed on the matter.

President Donald Trump has delivered an ultimatum to America's European allies to fix the "terrible flaws" in the Iran nuclear deal, or he'll pull the US out in a few months' time.

But Trump argues that his predecessor Barack Obama gave away too much to Iran in sanctions relief, without forcing the Islamic republic to end its ballistic missile program and support for militant groups.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said last week that he was working with Congress on legislative changes that would "strengthen the way the US enforces the agreement".

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif responded on Twitter that the deal was not renegotiable and that Trump's stance "amounts to desperate attempts to undermine a solid multilateral agreement".

He further stressed that the deal is "not renegotiable" and urged Trump to, instead of repeating exhausted rhetoric, bring the USA into full compliance of the deal, just like Iran.

"Instead, I have outlined two possible paths forward: either fix the deal's disastrous flaws, or the United States will withdraw". The new legislation also limits Trump's own ability to lift any sanctions against Russian Federation.

Trump had come under heavy pressure from European allies to issue the sanctions waiver. But he said he would work with European allies to remove so-called "sunset clauses" that allow Iran to gradually resume advanced nuclear activities in the next decade.

Iran has said it's not interested in any renegotiation and would nearly certainly view a side agreement between the USA and Europe as a violation of the deal.

The EU said it would hold internal consultations and was "committed to the continued full and effective implementation" of the deal. "No one should doubt my word".

The US Congress requires the president to approve sanctions waivers related to the deal - signed by Iran, the US, the UK, Russia, France, Germany, China and the European Union - every 120 days.

A new round of U.S. sanctions expected against Moscow is an attempt to influence Russia's domestic affairs ahead of a presidential election, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted as saying on Saturday (Jan 13). It said the sanctions are against global law and go against US commitments, saying they would bring a "strong reaction" from Iran. "It also will not allow the JCPOA to be linked to any other issue", it said.
