US Airstrike in Somalia Destroys Vehicle Carrying Explosives

This attack happened barely days after the Kenya Defense Forces killed five al Shabaab militants who are said to have been among a group of attackers who burnt the Ijara Police camp.

The early morning strike occurred approximately 50 kilometers west of Mogadishu, the Somalian capital.

The U.S. military said that, in addition to the militant deaths, a "vehicle-borne improvised explosive device" had been destroyed in the strike.

The Somali Military Court sentenced five defendants to death for participating in the October 14 attack that caused 512 deaths, attributed by the government to the terrorist group Al Shabab. It has deployed bomb attacks against government, military and civilian targets.

Last month, Washington warned of a threat to its diplomatic staff in Mogadishu and directed all non-essential staff to leave the city.

Postmates is an on-demand delivery service that carries packages between any two locations users choose. But the technology would add a new burden for pedestrians and cyclists.

US forces will continue to use all authorized and appropriate measures to protect the United States, its partners and interests, and deny safe haven to terrorist groups.

According to press releases, in December 2017, U.S. Africa Command killed a total of 25 al-Shabaab members in airstrikes. It says no civilians were killed.

The Shabaab has been fighting to overthrow successive internationally backed governments in Mogadishu since 2007 and frequently deploys vehicle and truck bombs against military, government and civilian targets.

The US has supported the AU force that has driven Al Shabaab out of Mogadishu and other towns since 2011.
