The rare lunar event that won't be seen again until 2037

A total lunar eclipse - considered the most scientific of yesterday's threesome - occurs when the sun, Earth and moon line up perfectly, casting Earth's shadow on the moon.

The eclipse, according to Nasa, will be "extra special" for those in the United States and other parts of the world such as the Middle East, Asia, eastern Russia, Australia and New Zealand, where the Blue Moon will coincide with a total lunar eclipse.

Here on the U.S. East Coast, we will be mostly out of luck; the moon will be setting just as the eclipse gets started.

Here's how it breaks down.

A blue moon refers to when there is a second full moon in a calendar month.

The moon on Wednesday was also a supermoon, but not quite as close to Earth as the one on January 1. Because February is only 28 days and the lunar cycle is about 29 days, March will also see two full moons. The moon doesn't orbit Earth in a flawless circle - it's an ellipse, which means there are times during the orbit that it is thousands of miles closer to Earth than others.

Others prefer "super blue blood moon". We can start seeing the partial shadow of the moon at 4.21pm, the eclipse will take over at 6.21pm and the super blue blood moon will emerge at 7.37pm, according to Jayant Ganguli, an officer at Regional Science Centre and Planetarium in Kozhikode.

Viewers on Twitter tweeted a mixture of grainy pictures to professionally shot snaps, as they watched the earth's satellite above them.

If you are up looking at the moon Wednesday, you'll also see Jupiter, Mars and Saturn.

The next time this will happen is in 2037. "The eclipse begins at 5:51 AM ET, as the Moon is about to set in the western sky, and the sky is getting lighter in the east". It takes its name from the deep red colour that is cast over the moon by the light from the sun as it moves past the Earth. Midway through Wednesday's eclipse, the moon will be even farther away - 223,820 miles (360,200 kilometers) - but still within unofficial supermoon guidelines. The next total lunar eclipse in North America will happen on January 21, 2019. "If the upper atmosphere is very dusty...the moon can be so dark you can't see it".

NASA will be broadcasting the total lunar eclipse live on NASA TV and NASA.gov/live, starting at 5:30 a.m. EST.

Lunar eclipses during a super moon happen rather regularly.

Those in central and western portions of the country saw the full lunar eclipse.
