Apple mulls refunds for battery replacement on old iPhones

The company gave more insight on the new battery options in the letter.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)'s stock had its "outperform" rating reiterated by analysts at William Blair in a research report issued to clients and investors on Friday. So Apple subsequently issued an apology and dropped the replacement battery price from $79 to $29.

This software does not affect the newest iPhone models introduced in the past year, including the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, according to Apple. The Cupertino firm unexpectedly found itself the center of a wrath-storm late past year, when it admitted that it had been limiting the performance of older iPhones that had degraded batteries. While Apple claims the move is for the best, customers did not receive the revelation well.

The Apple letter contains two pieces of information that prompt more questions rather than shed any light on the situation.

On a conference call with analysts last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook was asked whether investors should worry about discounted battery replacements cutting into the number of customers who feel the need to upgrade their iPhones. Apple states it will update the senate committee at some point in the future when it decides how to handle these cases. The Company's products and services include iPhone, iPad, Mac, iPod, Apple TV, a portfolio of consumer and professional software applications, the iOS and OS X operating systems, iCloud, and a variety of accessory, service and support offerings.

In the same earnings report, Apple showed why, even as the iPhone matures, the company as a whole will be just fine though.

Currently, our iPhone 7 is showing a maximum capacity of 86%.

Apple Introduces Battery Health Feature

A battery health function in the Settings app is another big addition, which will let users check the health of their iPhone's battery without downloading a third-party app or going to the Apple Store.

In December, the company endured criticism when it revealed this.

But in the timeline provided to the Senate, Apple acknowledges that the power management feature had been rolling out to customer iPhones for a month before it was added to the update's release notes or disclosed to the press.

Apple is exploring whether to offer rebates to customers who previously purchased fresh iPhone batteries in the wake of a controversy about its practice of slowing down older devices. It will likely cause customers to continue to question how much they can trust Apple to be transparent about new hardware and software features.

Thune said that in discussions with the committee "Apple has acknowledged that its initial disclosures came up short".

The committee on Industry Science and Technology, of which Masse is also vice chair, will invite Apple officials and stakeholders to Ottawa to discuss the impact the battery slowdown has had on Canadian consumers.
