David Davis: Brexit will not plunge Britain into Mad Max dystopia

He told the doubters: "They fear that Brexit could lead to an Anglo-Saxon race to the bottom".

Addressing an audience of Austrian business leaders, he will argue a common commitment to high regulatory standards should ensure trade with the European Union remained as "frictionless as possible" after Brexit.

Britain could withhold payment of its Brexit divorce bill if the European Union doesn't give it a trade deal, David Davis has suggested. High quality, comprehensive, gold standard'.

Keir Starmer, Brexit Shadow Secretary for the main opposition Labour Party, hit out at promises made by Davis in his speech about workers' rights and environmental protection, commenting: "it simply isn't worth the paper it is written on".

"With Britain plunged into a Mad Max-style world borrowed from dystopian fiction".

Davis also addressed the ongoing tricky negotiations which have stalled to a large degree on the key issues of citizens' rights and frictionless borders, particularly between Northern and Southern Ireland.

He will also highlight how the United Kingdom has played a key role in driving the development of global environmental action, highlighting how it was the first country to adopt a legally-binding Climate Change Act and originated a raft of environmental standards such as the standard for making large-scale events more sustainable, which was developed for the 2012 London Olympics and is "now being put to good use at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang".

First Alert Weather: Record high temperatures possible today
That would beat Wilmington's 1953 record of 70 degrees and Georgetown's 2014 record of 71 degrees, the weather service said. A foggy night and morning will make way for sunny skies and a high of 70 Wednesday afternoon, the forecast said.

It found 60 per cent of respondents want to retain or tighten vehicle fuel emission standards and more than 70 per cent want to retain renewable energy targets, which the British government has previously lobbied against.

Davis added: "The future trade talks will be a negotiation like no other".

Last week British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said it would be "absurd" if Britain were to leave the bloc "and not to take advantage of the economic freedom it will bring". He hinted strongly that he may be in favour of diluting standards, characterising them as requiring developers to "monitor two life cycles of the snail or build special swimming pools for newts".

European political website Politico said British officials had briefed that they hoped to use it to raise leverage and force the EU to give the United Kingdom the trade deal it wants.

Ministers have previously warned the United Kingdom would be forced to adopt a different "economic model" if it was unable to secure a satisfactory deal with the remaining 27 member states.

The report, which argues in favour of staying closer to the European model of trade rather than the USA one, also warns that there are signs that the United Kingdom wants to deregulate.

Meanwhile, Junior Minister for European Affairs, Helen McEntee, says the Irish Government is doing its best to influence the outcome. "And that there will be enforcement of such a border in terms of not only tariffs, but verification that the United Kingdom actually meets the standards they need to export into the European Union", he said, also listing checks for counterfeited goods or trafficking.
