Watch Lindsey Vonn's epic downhill run to win a bronze medal

"I gave it all today, skied a great race". I tried too hard to stay on a flawless line. "I'd have loved a gold medal, but honestly, I'm so proud".

"Thank you to everyone who supported me and helped me get to this point".

But there's still plenty of time for the US and other countries to put more athletes atop the podium.

Vonn, Goggia said. "It's like she has already made this. I have so much fun going fast and pushing myself to the limit on downhill skis there is nothing else I would rather do", she said. I'm trying to enjoy the moment as much as I can and I am thankful to share this race with such wonderful teammates.

"My opinions haven't changed, I've just chosen to focus on my sport right now and after these races, when there's a good opportunity where I can make a positive impact, then I will speak up again".

However, her sisters Laura and Karin told Reuters that they would "never say never" when it came to Vonn's career. "I think mostly it was intense because I wanted to win for my grandpa. I was not focused at all on the result".

But she was unable to defend her gold in the slalom the next day, finishing off the podium in fourth in what is considered her favorite event.

Mowinckel, whose best-ever in World Cup race is sixth, finished 0.09 of a second behind Goggia and Vonn was 0.47 behind.

Sad Vonn bids farewell to Olympic downhill with bronze
The last women's super-G champ who skipped the downhill at the same Winter Games was Diann Roffe of the U.S.in 1994. The four-time World Cup overall champion's tally is now 81. "My body probably just can't take another four years".

This is her third medal, along with her gold (downhill) and bronze (super-G) at the 2010 Vancouver Games. She was unable to race in the Sochi Games four years ago because of two knee surgeries in the previous year.

But she failed to live her dream when she set the time at 1:21.49, soon bested by several other competitors. She now has 81 wins, five behind Swedish legend Ingemar Stenmark.

"I always try to remember that it's people talking behind a computer and they're going to say anything", Vonn said Monday after her second downhill training run at the Jeongseon Alpine Center. "Of course I would have liked a gold medal, but honestly this is unbelievable and I'm so proud".

Siebenhofer clocked one minute 40.67 seconds to top the timesheets with Swiss Michelle Gisin, whose now retired sister Dominique shared the 2014 downhill gold with Tina Maze, and Italian Nadia Fanchini 0.2 and 0.21 seconds further back. Throughout her snowboarding career, she's been skiing on her off days.

Any regrets about skipping the Olympic downhill? Instead, 22-year-old Ester Ledecká of the Czech Republic, who is primarily a snowboarder, won a surprise gold.

"We'll see how the training run goes tomorrow".

Mikaela Shiffrin, who chose to pull out of the downhill on Monday night, took advantage of the final training run to prepare for the combined, which has been brought forward to Thursday because of forecast high winds.
