Indian Wells: Roger Federer match suspended, Verdasco stuns Dimitrov

Both Djokovic and Edmund were making their first appearances since the Australian Open.

On his highly-anticipated return to the tour after right elbow surgery, Djokovic looked a shadow of his former self. Djokovic even admitted that he lacked rhythm in the game.

Djokovic made a comeback after a long period out of the game at the Australian Open.

"I just completely lost rhythm, everything", Djokovic told reporters afterwards.

Djokovic - who benefited from a bye in the first round - relinquished a 5-2 lead in the first set and wound up committing 61 unforced errors.

South Korea's Hyeon Chung, who surpassed all expectations to reach the Australian Open semi-finals earlier this year, also advanced, taking almost three hours to overcome Dusan Lajovic 6-7 (11/9) 6-3 6-3.

"I was grateful to be out on the court after surgery that quickly but at the same time just didn't feel good at all".

Chiefs release veteran Tamba Hali, clear $7.7 million in cap room
Hali's release was expected given lack of on-field production in 2017 and the cost of keeping him on the roster. Hali's contract was set to expire after next season and the Chiefs would take a $9.4 million cap hit.

"You're still battling inside of your mind", he added, referencing his recent elbow surgery.

Frenchman Gael Monfils survived a match point before beating big-serving American 15th seed John Isner 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-3) 7-5. "You don't have pain, but you're still thinking about it".

Japan's Kei Nishikori withdrew through illness before playing his opening match of the tournament. Federer, who earned his fifth title at Indian Wells a year ago, saved a set point in the second-set tiebreaker and advanced to face Filip Krajinovic on Monday.

Federer returned to stadium court on Sunday afternoon and needed an hour to close out his second-round victory 6-3, 7-6 (8/6). Two weeks later he beat Federer again in Miami and this was the first time since the summer of 2004 that Roger failed to reach the final in back-to-back ATP events.

Holder Roger Federer avoided the same fate as Djokovic, though the Swiss top seed was pushed hard by Argentine Federico Delbonis in a match that was completed on Sunday after being halted by rain on Saturday. The 10th seed in the women's draw.

The 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-1 loss resulted in a quick exit from a tournament the Serbian has won five times.

"I was feeling like he was not loving my slice and I was also mixing in dropshots", said Federer, who extended his ideal record this season to 14-0.
