What Can Be Done for a Nuclear Deal with North Korea?

President Donald Trump agreed last week to meet with Kim by May, in what would be the first talks between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader.

"This potential meeting has been agreed to, there are no additional conditions being stipulated, but, again they cannot engage in missile testing, nuclear testing and they can't publicly object to the U.S".

However, North Korea has provide a concrete commitment to cut back its nuclear program, while Kim apparently told a South Korean delegation to Pyongyang last week that he understands the need for Seoul and Washington to continue the joint drills.

Previous meetings between North Korean and American officials have taken place in Pyongyang, including a 2000 meeting between US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Kim's father and predecessor Kim Jong Il.

Prior to the rally, Mr Trump attempted to rally global support for the summit, saying North Korea had agreed to not conduct another missile test until after proposed meetings had taken place. "As long as all parties insist on solving the issue politically and maintain this direction, we can undoubtedly lead the situation on the Korean Peninsula to move forward in the direction in which the global community hopes for", Yang said.

Full credit must go to the South Koreans. "I may leave fast or we may sit down and make the greatest deal for the world". However, the North Koreans are much more hardened and experienced than their South Korean and USA counterparts. Kim's father Kim Jong Il said in talks with the South in 2000 that he could tolerate their presence. South Korea's President Moon Jae-in also plans a summit with Kim by the end of April.
