Geomagnetic storm to hit Earth tomorrow - should you be anxious?

According to the Russian Academy of Sciences, there is a massive geomagnetic storm set to hit Earth on March 18. The storm could result in blackouts and jeopardize communication satellites, and thus all telecommunication on Earth.

If you're hoping to catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis in the northern USA over the next few days, you'll want to travel out of a city and as far away from lights as possible. According to NASA, the lights could reach as far south as ME and northern MI.

These cracks weaken our planet's natural protection against charged particles and could leave commercial flights and GPS systems exposed to the incoming storm. The largest of these storms are associated with solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs), huge expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun's corona, or outer atmosphere. There may be some very weak power grid fluctuations caused by small surges of geomagnetically induced current - you probably won't even notice them. The weather in the space is quite cool and there is no imminent threat of any type of geomagnetic storm.

Effects were so strong that, in some cases, telegraph wires delivered shocks to operators and ignited fires, and aurorae-phenomena usually only visible in polar regions-were seen as far south as Hawaii, Mexico, Cuba, and Italy. This basically means there could be some slight glitches to satellite communications and power grid controllers.

One of the solar flares that was created last week is said to be the largest in a cycle known as the solar minimum, which dates back to early 2007.

Reports of a major solar storms that could wreak havoc on Earth this week are wide of the mark, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which has not noted any significant storm-related activity on the Sun. If that occurs in Earth's direction, we can see the effects as the charged particles interact with our magnetosphere.

Giants to lure ex-Panthers RB Stewart to NY
The New York Giants missed out on their ideal ex-Carolina Panther in this week's free agent frenzy. Beginning the year as the starting running back, Perkins had a very disappointing 2017.

The event coincides with the formation of "equinox cracks".

But the equinoxes also cause cracks to open up in Earth's magnetic field which stay open for hours.

NOAA supports creating forecasts for weather on our planet.

Has Earth experienced magnetic storms and what do they look like?

The warning, issued by the Australian Space Forecast Centre, said the increased geomagnetic activity was due to a "coronal hole high speed wind stream".
