Students injured when Monterey County teacher accidentally fires handgun in class

A California teacher armed with a handgun injured three students when he accidentally fired it at the ceiling during a gun safety class. Upon learning of the incident, our Human Resources department, school site administration and the Seaside Police Department immediately began investigating the incident, including interviewing students in the class. The caller told the 911 operator that a weapon went off during class and that someone might be injured. "I'm just pretty upset that no one told us anything and we had to call the police ourselves to report it".

The incident occurred Tuesday at Seaside High School as Dennis Alexander was teaching a gun safety lesson for his administration of justice class.

"It's the craziest thing".

The teacher has since been placed on administration leave from the school and the Sand City Police Department. The teacher reportedly apologized to the stunned group of students.

The Monterey County Weekly, quoting Sand City Police Chief Brian Ferrante, reported that Alexander had his last gun safety training less than a year ago.

'It could have been very bad, ' Gonzales said.

Alexander has served as a reserve officer for more than a decade and was named Reserve Officer of the Year in 2013 by the California Reserve Peace Officers Association for heroics during the course of duty, Ferrante told local media that Alexander, who has a history of positive professionalism.

The incident comes amid a national debate on how to protect students from mass shootings like the one that took the lives of 17 students in Parkland, Fla., on February 14.

Gonzales said Tuesday's incident changed his views about President Donald Trump's recent proposal to arm teachers.
