Toyota teases new direction for Rav4

Teased in a shadowy silhouette image, the Japanese brand's fifth-generation RAV4 will debut at the NY auto show that kicks off March 28.

If you can't attend the New York Auto Show in person but still want to catch the reveal of the 2019 Toyota RAV4, you can catch the official livestream that day at 9:10 AM EDT.

In the teaser, it appears to show a more upmarket model, with a longer profile similar to that of the NX/RX SUVs, from Toyota's premium brand Lexus.

Last redesigned in 2013, the RAV4 has enjoyed being Toyota's best-selling vehicle in America, but it now ages behind recently revamped competitors such as the Chevrolet Equinox, Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5.

Officials have raised concerns about the cost of launching the new rules, saying it would require more staff. They noted that the state agency that would have to oversee licensing opposed it.

Powering the new line-up will be four-cylinder petrol and hybrid electric drivetrains, in-line with Toyota's plan to offer an electrified variant in all models by 2025 and its announcement this month that it will stop producing diesel engines for passenger vehicles, injecting only petrol, hybrid and hydrogen powertrains into future cars.

The introduction of the new RAV4 follows last week's reveal of the all-new, 12th-generation Corolla in hatchback guise at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show.
