Haley to Russian Federation on Syria's Chemical Weapons: 'We Know Who Did This'

Russian Federation is expected to call an emergency session of UN Security Council to discuss the strikes on Syria at 11A.M. EST. Moscow warned against any strikes and threatened to retaliate.

It comes as London has blamed Moscow for a nerve agent attack on a former double agent and his daughter in the English city of Salisbury last month. Putin and Macron instructed their foreign and defense ministers to maintain close contact to "de-escalate the situation", the Kremlin said.

The United States, France and the United Kingdom today carried out a series of missile attacks against three targets associated with the production and storage of chemical weapons in Syria.

"Based on recent experience, we fully expect a significant disinformation campaign over the coming days by those who have aligned themselves with the Assad regime", Mattis said.

Western powers weighed their options on Friday over possible strikes against Syria's regime as pressure built to avoid an escalation and Russian Federation stepped up its warnings against military action which it said could lead to "war".

"These systems were supposed to be supplied there a long time ago..." The US and its allies believe the Syrian regime was behind the attack, but Russian Federation has long insisted it was staged by rebels in an attempt to provoke further Western intervention.

Russia, the main ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, says there is no evidence of a chemical attack in Douma and has warned the USA and its allies against conducting any military strike. While Trump himself remained silent on Syria on Friday, Macron - who has said France has proof that Assad's government used chemical weapons in Douma - spoke by phone with Putin.

Russia's Ministry of Defense said it believed the action by the US, UK and France was not in retaliation to the alleged chemical attack in Douma but instead was a reaction to the "success" of the Syrian army in liberating its territory from rebels.

Speaking to reporters in Moscow, Lavrov reiterated a strong warning to the West against military action in Syria.

"I hope no one would dare to launch such an adventure now", Mr Lavrov said.

Western allies, including the United States, the UK, and France, are thought to be preparing for strikes, but Russian Federation, a Syrian ally, has strongly opposed such action.

A fact-finding mission from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is expected to head to Douma.

"The sole thing that they have an interest in is to oust the Syrian government and to deter, contain the Russian Federation", he added. It also said Russian officers found no patients with chemical attack symptoms at a local hospital, and no indication of any burials having taken place of the victims.

Turkey, an important player in the Syrian conflict, said it viewed the airstrikes as "an appropriate response" to the Douma attack. The government's capture of Douma, the last town held by the rebels in eastern Ghouta, marked a major victory for Assad.
