IMD forecasts 97% normal monsoon for 2018

IMD forecasts 97% normal monsoon for 2018

India is likely to receive average monsoon rains in 2018, the meteorological department said, raising the possibility of higher farm and economic growth in Asia's third-biggest economy, where half of the farmland lacks irrigation. Less than 90 per cent LPA is termed "deficient" monsoon, and 90-96 per cent of the same is considered "below normal".

The IMD, however, will forecast the onset of monsoon in middle of next month.

Last year, the country as a whole received rainfall that was 95 per cent of its long-period average.

Sunday's maximum temperature settled at 36 degrees Celsius, one notch above the season's average, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 20.5 degrees Celsius, normal for the season.

IMD's SEFS model for the April forecast uses the following 5 predictors that require data upto March. The region-based forecast will also be available only in June when the second assessment is done, Ramesh said.

The all India weather inference, issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), stated that a cyclonic circulation at 1.5 kilometres above sea level is present over central parts of south Madhya Pradesh and neighbouring areas.

The IMD forecast comes days after a similar prediction by the private weather forecast agency Skymet Weather, which on April 4 said the Monsoon 2018 was likely to remain normal at 100 per cent (with an error margin of +/-5 per cent) of the long period average (LPA) of 887 mm for the four-month period from June to September. Anything between 90-96 per cent of the LPA is considered "below normal".

The rains after making a steady start in June and July, went for an extended break in August and also till early September which pulled down the total cumulative seasonal rainfall.
