Russian Federation calls Syrian 'chemical attack' staged

On Sunday, the day after the attack, the United States president said Russian President Vladimir Putin bore responsibility for the "atrocity" in rebel-held Douma, because of his support for the Syrian government.

Reacting to the threats, Russia, an important ally of Syria, accused Washington of disrupting worldwide peace.

"Russia convenes an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss aggressive actions of the USA and its allies", Putin said in a statement published on the Kremlin Web site.

The Russian defence ministry and the Kremlin have yet to make any comment on the strikes announced by US President Donald Trump.

Also on Thursday, US Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis told a congressional panel: "I believe there was a chemical attack and we are looking for the actual evidence".

The strikes have come after a week-long global push to punish the Assad regime after images and videos emerged on April 7 suggesting civilians - including children - had suffered a chemical attack in Douma.

Analyst Alexey Malashenko, a specialist in the Syria conflict, told AFP that military retaliation would be highly risky for Russian Federation and Moscow appeared to be choosing a war of words instead.

According to a statement by the French presidency, Macron called for dialogue between France and Russian Federation to "continue and intensify" to bring peace and stability to Syria.

The two countries are separated by the 2,400-kilometer (1,500-mile) Durand Line, which was drawn by British rulers in 1896. There were no reports regarding losses inflicted to the alleged terrorists.

In the UK, Cabinet ministers said that it was "highly likely" the Assad regime was responsible for the attack and said the use of chemical weapons must not "go unchallenged".

The Russian Ambassador to the United States issued a strongly-worded threat after President Trump called out the Kremlin on Friday for failing to stop Syria's alleged use of chemical weapons.

Russia's announcement of the conspiracy happened after the Trump administration was considering military response against the Syrian government after reports emerged of Bashar's repetitive use of chemical weapons.

Some analysts have predicted that the Kremlin will not wish to engage in a military clash with the US, but that the ongoing tension with Syria could push the two sides toward a military confrontation.

Contrary to the US' accusations, the Syrian government has rejected all claims, stating that it wasn't behind the attack.

However, she said that when it will take place has not yet been finalised. Syria's civil war, which began as a popular uprising against Assad, is now in its eighth year.

"The mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has set off to Syria not so quickly and without abundant enthusiasm but under our and Syrian pressure". It also said Russian officers found no patients with chemical attack symptoms at a local hospital, and no indication of any burials of victims. "It is due to arrive in Damascus on April 14", TASS news agency quoted Lavrov as saying. The government's capture of Douma, the last town held by the rebels in eastern Ghouta, marked a major victory for Assad.
