Schalke go four clear of Dortmund

Schalke are flying high this season and are second in the Bundesliga behind freshly-crowned champions Bayern Munich.

FC Schalke 04 firmed their grip on second position in the Bundesliga after beating closest challengers Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at the Veltins-Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann was nearly untested in the home goal, bar a simple save from a Marco Reus free-kick, as Domenico Tedesco's men successfully stifled their opponents.

Reus did manage to test Fahrmann on 67 minutes after Schalke survived a penalty appeal when Christian Pulisic went to ground, and the U.S. global fizzed a first-time shot over the bar four minutes later from the German's cross. Dortmund is four points behind Schalke and four ahead of Leipzig, held to a 1-1 draw at Werder Bremen in the late game. The Dortmund captain lost the ball to Daniel Caligiuri, who surged forward and found the unmarked Konoplyanka to pick his spot and blast inside the left post.

Schalke, now second in the German top-flight, took the lead just after break, with Yevhen Konoplyanka capitalising on an error from Marcel Schmelzer.

Batshuayi could be set to return to Chelsea for treatment.

A short free-kick was swiftly worked wide of the wall for defender Naldo to hammer an unstoppable drive that curled dramatically away from the helpless goalkeeper Burki, a strike worthy of settling any derby clash.
