Smart puts up shots prior to Celtics-Bucks Game 1

The Bucks, who have not won an National Basketball Association playoff series since 2001, have been losers in seven consecutive first-round playoff series.

With All-Star Kyrie Irving done for the year, Smart could soak up minutes at the point with Terry Rozier, and theoretically knock someone like Shane Larkin out of the rotation.

Stevens said he plans to have a lot of different people on him, but the main man will be Al Horford, as he said: "We have to throw a lot of different bodies at him".

Giannis Antetokounmpo showed out for the Bucks with 35 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists, with Middleton finishing with 31 points. It's the first playoff meeting between the Bucks and Celtics since 1987, when Boston won a seven-game series in the East semifinals. The two teams split their four matchups this season.

Game 2 of the series is Tuesday in Boston. Rozier, making his first playoff start, sank a 3-pointer with a half-second remaining to give Boston the lead but Middleton drilled another equalizer from halfway between the arc and half-court at the final buzzer to force over-time at 99-99.

The three-pointer came just seconds after Celtics reserve guard Terry Rozier hit a massive step-back three that seemed to put the game away.

Antetokounmpo made one of two foul shots with 14.8 seconds left, but he fouled out of the game while going for the rebound on his miss.

Boston salted the win at the line after that. Boston defended well in overtime and deservedly took a 1-0 lead in the series.

Smart has been one of Boston's more versatile players this season, showing the ability to defend multiple positions in addition to coming up with big plays in the clutch.

Middleton hit a desperation 3-pointer from near mid-court as time expired to send it to overtime. However, Smart said he might be able to return for a potential Game 7 against Milwaukee.

Bucks: Outscored the Celtics 58-44 in the paint.
