Trump slams former Federal Bureau of Investigation director as 'slime ball' over deeply critical book

On Sunday night, former FBI Director James Comey told ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos that his notes recording meetings with President Donald Trump shifted to "collecting evidence of a crime".

The man who served as Trump's FBIÂ director until the president fired him in May said the truth, the rule of law and integrity were "things [that] matter before any fights about policies" like whether the U.S. should build a border wall or more strictly regulate the sale guns.

Mr Comey has kept quiet about his time under Mr Trump for almost a year, with the interview and his new tell-all book, A Higher Loyalty, breaking the silence.

When asked if the Russians had something on Trump, Comey said: "I think it's possible".

"People in this country need to stand up and go to the voting booth and vote their values", he said.

"I think it is [dangerous]", Comey told Stephanopoulos.

Refuting the contents of the book, excerpts of which have appeared in the American press, Trump said he never asked Comey for personal loyalty.

"I hope not because I think impeaching and removing Donald Trump from office would let the American people off the hook and have something happen indirectly that I believe they're duty bound to do directly", he said.

Comey described in great detail several conversations he had with Trump, telling Stephanopoulos of how the president asked for his loyalty and how that interaction and others reminded him of his time as a prosecutor in NY pursuing mob families, for whom loyalty to the boss and the organization were the only values that mattered.

Comey says he pushed back, but that Lynch was firm: "Just call it a matter", she said.

This opposition is the main reason Kinder Morgan put the brakes on non-essential funding for the project approximately a week ago. Kenney said this inaction simply shows the total failure of the Liberal NDP strategy to defend Canada's energy industry.

The President rubbished the claim on Twitter, calling it another of his many lies. "His "memos" are self serving and FAKE!" Trump cited the memo in firing Comey, and Comey said he came to believe Rosenstein was "part of the family now". Trump past year abruptly removed Comey who was overseeing a criminal probe into whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government to influence the 2016 presidential election that was won by him.

Comey added that Trump treated women like they were "pieces of meat", BBC reported.

The five-hour interview kicked off a publicity tour for Comey's memoir "A Higher Loyalty," which details his brief stint working under Trump.

"James Comey is a proven LEAKER & LIAR".

The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment about the Comey interview.

Trump said, according to Comey.

JAMES COMEY: I don't know what's behind that.

He says he knows that's a "stunning" possibility and something that he never thought he'd say about a president of the United States.

In the ABC segment that aired on Friday (Saturday NZT), Stephanopoulos also asked Comey if he had disclosed to Trump the source of funding of the dossier, compiled by Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer.

Comey told ABC News that he believes there is "certainly some evidence of obstruction of justice". "It would depend. upon other things that reflected on his intent". Mr. Trump's early-morning missives slammed the ex-director as a "slimeball", while simultaneously casting Comey as someone he "hardly knew".

Comey's claim that unverified classified material exists that could have "cast serious doubt" on then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch's "independence" with the Clinton investigation.
