National Weather Service confirms EF-1 tornado in Decatur County

Tornadoes damaged several homes in neighboring Union County, which had two tornadoes, County Judge Mike Loftin said.

LAVACA, Ark. - At 6:23 p.m. CDT on Sunday, the National Weather Service in Tulsa confirmed a fifth Tornado touched down near Lavaca, Arkansas, on Friday, which was classified an EF-1 with winds between 85 and 95 miles per hour. All of this damage was was located near US HWY 82 at the Ashley/Chicot County line.

Sgt. James Cooper with the Hanover County Sheriff's Office said early Monday afternoon that one road in the western part of the county was closed due to high water.

Regardless of how severe the tornado was classified, Turner said the weather posed a precarious situation for people even outside of its path. Damage was not catastrophic in any community and the wind speeds were on the lower end for tornadoes, but the twisters blew debris onto county roads, damaged some buildings and left some people white-knuckle driving.

A spokesman for the Summit County EMA says Barberton and Copley were the hardest hit areas during Sunday night's storm.

They said that relatives of the Thottapilly family positively identified the items as belongings of their family members. Just before noon, searchers aboard a boat smelled gas coming from the water below, according to the statement.

Police said 48-year-old Anthony George of Greensboro was killed about 5:45 p.m. Sunday when a tree fell on his vehicle.

It looks to be a relatively cold storm, with up to 12 inches of snow possible at Sonora Pass on Highway 108.

A North Carolina school system is canceling classes for a second day because of damages caused by a tornado. That is northeast of Mountain Home.

The weather service in SC said tornadoes also hit Lexington and Irmo, but no serious injuries were reported. It also did minor damage to a church, to a garage and outbuildings.

Farther east, a suspected EF0 tornado touched down near Oppelo in Conway County.
