Special status for Andhra: YSRCP seeks President Kovind's intervention

Shops and establishments remained shut and vehicles stayed off the roads in Andhra Pradesh on Monday following a shutdown called by Pratyeka Hoda Sadhana Samiti (PHSS), a non-political organization formed to demand special category status for the state.

Former MLA and senior Telugu Desam Party leader Challa Ramakrishna Reddy, who recently refused to accept the APSRTC Kadapa regional chairman post, lashed out at Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday accusing him of offending his pride and dignity by lowering his stature.

The report also said transport services between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are also likely to be affected as well with the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation announcing that it will operate its buses only till the Andhra Pradesh state border.

This bandh was supported by Left parties, Andhra's chief opposition party YSRCP, the Congress and Pawan Kalyan's Jana Sena party.

Andhra Pradesh bandh LIVE UPDATES: Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said bandhs were not welcome as they hamper development. He said Naidu should understand that bandh was a form of a democratic protest and he had no right to oppose it.

He alleged that the state government had been issuing notices to those supporting the bandh, saying cases would be booked against them.

Protests demanding special status for Andhra Pradesh gained speed after there was no mention of a special package for the state in the Union Budget.

TDP reached a deadlock with its ally BJP over the non-issuance of the status to the state and ultimately quit the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition on March 16.

The Congress party workers and leaders also participated in the bandh.
