Two weather warnings issued as wind and rain to batter Ireland

Heavy showers and strong winds are expected across the country and two status yellow warnings have been put in place by Met Eireann.

They state that there will be "rainfall accumulations of 25 to 40mm expected over the period, with the potential for higher amounts on hills and mountains".

The rainfall warning is for Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Waterford.

While winds of up to 65 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 110 kilometres per hour are expected in Atlantic coastal areas between 9 am this morning and 6 o'clock tomorrow morning.

Winds will be strongest along Atlantic coastal counties at first, but the strong winds will extend countrywide through the course of this afternoon and evening. Heavy showers will then follow, turning persistent before nightfall. Highest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees with fresh southerly breezes.

A wind warning for the entire country has been in place since 9:00am this morning.

According to BBC weather forecaster Barra Best, Storm Irene is making its way from Portugal and will hit the Emerald Isle later this afternoon.

The weather is set to finally improve this week.

Some drier and milder weather will develop from Tuesday but it will turn unsettled again later in the weekend and for early next week.

"Thursday will be mostly dry and bright with lighter winds and afternoon temperatures of 14C to 17C or possibly 18C".

"It will be noticeably cooler on Friday with a few showers appearing especially in northern counties with highs of 12C to 16C", added Ms Lowe.
