Will Trump Back Down on Syria?

It is not the first time Mr. Trump has warned Russian Federation or its president, Vladimir V. Putin, for supporting the Syrian regime, led by Bashar al-Assad, believed to be behind the suspected chemical weapons attack on April 7 that has left dozens dead.

Western leaders warned Syria on Saturday that they could launch further missile strikes if chemical weapons are used again, while the pre-dawn attacks were denounced by Damascus and its backers as illegal actions that would carry repercussions.

The drumbeat of military action appeared to grow louder, as Russian Federation stonewalled diplomatic efforts at the United Nations and France declared "proof" that Moscow's Syrian ally carried out a deadly chemical weapons attack that killed more than 40 Syrians. "Get ready Russian Federation, because they will be coming, nice and new and "smart", Trump wrote on Twitter.

Trump's latest threat is a response to comments made by Alexander Zasypkin, Russia's ambassador to Lebanon, who on Tuesday evening said Russia would respond to any U.S. strike on Syri by targeting any missiles and launchers.

"I think that some sort of a strike will be carried out [by the United States on Syria, ]" the senator noted, adding that he take Trump's tweet about "smart" missiles seriously, firstly because there was a precedent a year ago when the USA hit the Shayrat Airbase, and secondly the American president is now demanded to take inclusive measures on Syria.

Trump previous year ordered a strike against Assad following a deadly sarin gas attack on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhun.

He also called the Syrian leader a "gas killing animal".

British Prime Minister Theresa May said in London that the West had tried "every possible" diplomatic means to stop Assad from using chemical weapons.

Asked about Macron's comments, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders stressed that Trump's plans for the region have not changed.

NBC News reported that USA officials obtained blood and urine samples from victims of the Douma attack that tested positive for chemicals, mainly for chlorine and some for a nerve agent.

Jennifer Cafarella, a Syria analyst for the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War, told AFP that one potential target would be Dumayr military airport northeast of Damascus, from where regime aircraft used in Saturday's attack may have launched.

Mattis also ignored a question about whether he was concerned about telegraphing United States military moves in Syria, a question appearing to refer to Trump's earlier tweet on Wednesday. "The president holds Syria and Russian Federation responsible for this chemical weapons attack".

Sources had indicated earlier in the day that the council would meet Thursday afternoon to make decisions regarding Syria.

A global chemical warfare watchdog group, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, said its fact-finding mission would go as planned in Douma.

He had repeatedly said he would not telegraph military moves towards foes. He criticized the US and its allies for launching the strike without waiting for global inspectors to complete their visit to the area.

"We also selected targets that would minimize the risks to innocent civilians", Mattis said.

Earlier this year, the Times reported that Trump ordered Mueller's firing last June but "ultimately backed down" after White House counsel Donald F. McGahn II threatened to resign in protest. "But our efforts have been repeatedly thwarted" by Syria and Russian Federation, she said. Syrian activists, rescuers and medics said the attack in Douma killed at least 40 people, with families found suffocated in their houses and shelters.

On Wednesday, a top official from Iran, Assad's other main ally, toured eastern Ghouta and vowed to stand by Syria in the face of "any foreign aggression".

Russian Federation has military forces, including air defenses, in several areas of Syria to support Assad in his long war against anti-government rebels.

At the same time Mrs May is under pressure to give Parliament the chance to vote before committing United Kingdom forces to any new action in Syria, amid fears it could draw the West into direct conflict with Assad's main backer, Russia.
