Funerals taking place for slain Gilchrist County deputies

It will be Bell Middle/High School at 10 a.m.

Gilchrist County's chaplain, Pastor Patrick Bible, also spoke at the non-denominational service.

Graveside honors will be at the Bronson Cemetery at State Road 24 and Marshburn Drive in Bronson.

The man identified as the suspect who fatally shot two Gilchrist County deputies in a restaurant Thursday afternoon before taking his own life has ties to the Tampa Bay area. They were on duty and in uniform. Officials state they were took at by John Hubert Highnote of Bell murdering himself.

Ramirez, 29, is survived by his wife and two young children.

Law enforcement officers from as far away as Miami were seen Tuesday morning, preparing to pay their respect to their fallen comrades.

The deputies were remembered at a vigil Saturday night.

Sergeant Ramirez had served with the Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office for seven years. "The deputies arriving to assist you may not be a familiar face, and their vehicle will be from a supporting Sheriff's Office, but know they are professionals and are there on my behalf".

Authorities say 58-year-old John Hubert Highnote shot Ramirez and Lindsey on Thursday at the Ace China restaurant in Trenton. They were unable to return fire. "No officers engaged with the assailant".

The front windows of the restaurant did not appear to be blown out.

Shultz called the men "the best of the best" during press conference.

"They died for what was right and good and decent", Bible said.

Lindsey, 25, has served more than 3 years on the force.

Other than being cited for making an improper turn in 2012, Highnote has nothing on his record in Gilchrist County.

Records show that Highnote had a long and violent criminal history, going back to a charge of illegally concealing a handgun in 1978.

"What do you expect happens when you demonize law enforcement to the extent it's been demonized?"

This shooter was a "coward", the sheriff added. "Every type of hate, every type of put down you can think of, the only thing these men were guilty of was protecting you and me". "They just wanted to get something to eat, and they just wanted to do their jobs".

President Trump was among leaders across the country to send their condolences, calling the deputies "heroes".

While his office has not released information about a motive, Schultz indicated that the culture of hatred toward law enforcement - the war on cops - is ultimately to blame.

Bill Cervone, a state attorney, told The Gainsville Sun, "It appears he just walked up and shot them, then went to his auto and shot himself".

"We will never understand why these heroes were taken from us so young, an act so void of any reason", Governor Rick Scott said.

First Coast News talked to many people in the small town of Trenton, a town where everyone seems to know everyone.

He said Ramirez had an infectious smile and Lindsey loved to stop the flow of illegal drugs. "They are men with integrity". "They were God-fearing, and they loved what they did, and we are very proud of them".
