Cardin Points to Iran Deal as Issue with North Korea

The allure of economic help could be enough for Kim to accept terms to denuclearize, as Pompeo said that there's a chance that North Korea and the USA could become "partners", according to the Los Angeles Times.

The meeting between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un is scheduled for one day on 12 June, but if either or both of the leaders decide to stay overnight, there is only one hotel room in all of Singapore that meets "security protocol" for the United States president.

Ms Kang praised the upcoming meeting between Mr Trump and Mr Kim in Singapore as a "historic" opportunity, but added a few notes of skepticism as well.

Particularly worrisome for Trump, according to Russel, is that Kim has managed to sow division among the countries dealing with North Korea - China, the U.S., South Korea, Japan and Russian Federation - by meeting individually with leaders including the presidents of South Korea and China.

Instead, peace talks between North and South Korea started in January of this year, and South Korean President Moon Jae-in credited the US president with having "made a huge contribution to make inter-Korean talks happen".

Mr Pompeo said there would need to be "complete" and "robust verification" of denuclearisation, suggesting it would involve inspections to ensure the North's compliance.

"If Chairman Kim chooses the right path, there is a future brimming with peace and prosperity for the North Korean people", Pompeo said, adding that America's "track record of support for the Korean people is second to none". Kim has said that North Korea now has the capability to strike the continental United States.

"Six months ago, the five countries stood shoulder-to-shoulder and stood in lockstep", Russel said.

After addressing the return of the three American detainees, Trump was asked about the prospects of making a deal with the North Korean leader. And China also fears economic pressure may result in migrants fleeing North Korea for China.

Fox News reported that the summit is expected to take place in Singapore in early June.

When Trump and Kim do sit down, the two relatively untested leaders will be presented with a puzzle that has stymied seasoned diplomats for decades.

Relatives say past South Korean governments ignored the issue while chasing inter-Korean summits or were reluctant to revisit a time when the country failed repeatedly to protect its own citizens.

At best, a Trump-Kim summit will produce more vague formulations of what might be possible through further talks.

Pompeo was in Pyongyang to discuss Trump's plans to meet with North Korea's Kim Jong Un in the coming weeks.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has pushed for Panmunjom, one reason Trump considered it. From tax reform to worldwide trade to foreign policy, Trump has pursued a high-risk, high-reward approach that advisers say can help produce results on longstanding problems - and that critics warn could trigger risky repercussions all the way from a trade war to global conflict.

South Korean art group's visit to Pyongyang was a reciprocation to the DPRK's dispatch of artists to the 2018 Winter Olympics that was held in February at South Korea's east county of PyeongChang.

"Kim Jong-un's entire lineage is having people think he might be insane".

Whatever happens before or after this historic summit, it's the first between a current North Korean leader and a sitting US president.

North Korea's former spy chief Kim Yong Chul, director of the country's United Front Department, boasted in a toast to Pompeo over lunch in Pyongyang on Wednesday that North Korea had "perfected" it nuclear capability.

President Trump speaks about the hostages released from North Korea during a Cabinet meeting at the White House on Wednesday. But he said he thinks Kim has a good understanding of what the USA means by all of that.
