Putin aide says no talks underway with Syria on S-300

Russian Federation last month hinted it would supply the weapons to Bashar al-Assad, over Israeli objections, after Western military strikes on Syria.

Russia is not now negotiating with Syria over the transfer of the S-300 air defense system, a Kremlin aide told a Russian newspaper on Friday, saying the Syrian army has "all that is needed".

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on a statement, which acting Russian Presidential Aide for Military and Technical Cooperation Vladimir Kozhin gave in an interview with the newspaper Izvestia, reported Russian state news agency TASS, "Technologically, it is absolutely incorrect to link this [Kozhin's words] with Netanyahu's visit because the interview was given before Netanyahu's visit", the acting Kremlin spokesman pointed out.

Kozhin, who oversees Russian military assistance to other countries, added that the Syrian forces had "everything they needed". "But we did say after the [Western] strikes [on Syria] that of course Russian Federation reserved the right to do anything it considered necessary".

The mission - the largest air campaign carried out by Israel in Syria in over 40 years - was "very successful", a senior air force officer said Thursday, but warned that Israel believes that Iranian forces in Syria are still in possession of surface-to-surface missiles that could again be fired at Israel.

Though since been superseded by the more modern S-400 system, the S-300s are still regarded as highly potent and outstrip anything that the Syrian government now has.

On Thursday, Israel said it had attacked almost all of Iran's military infrastructure in Syria after Iranian forces fired rockets at Israeli-held territory.

Israel became concerned about the possible arrival of a new defense system in Syria after a wave of airstrikes on targets in Syrian by French, British and USA fighter planes in April.
