Apple Hit with Class Action Suit over MacBook Keyboard Failures

Apple Hit with Class Action Suit over MacBook Keyboard Failures

Apple's much-defamed keyboard design has bugged many customers since the day of its launch.

Now it looks like the keyboard debacle has been taken one step further because according to AppleInsider, a class action lawsuit has been filed in which it claims that Apple knew about the defects in their keyboards but still chose to ship them out anyway.

Apple is yet to respond to the lawsuit and the company is not likely to say that it was unaware of the issue.

The complaint was lodged in the Northern District Court of California.

On Friday Night, Apple was hit with a class action lawsuit over the butterfly switch keyboards that have been on the MacBook Pro line since 2015. The most common complaint is that the design is so fragile, even small amounts of dust or debris can make keystrokes fail to register. The replacement L key failed. Apple used the new keyboard on the 12-inch MacBook laptop and its MacBook Pros starting in late 2016. This mechanism was meant to be more stable, comfortable as well as more responsive than the older scissor mechanism. At that time, the company claimed that this was more accurate and precise than other keyboards.

The firm introduced its slimmer butterfly key-switch mechanism in 2015, and consumers haven't exactly been shy with expressing how they feel about it.

Experts Warn New Bugs Could Expose PGP Emails
It's believed that the vulnerabilities exist in the email clients themselves, rather than the PGP encryption protocol. This is then encrypted with the sender's private "key" and decrypted by the receiver using a separate public key.

As evidence of the widespread fault, the claimants pointed to a petition on Change.org demanding Apple replace the "defective" keyboard mechanism, which had attracted 19,425 signatures at time of writing.

The case has two plaintiffs who claim to have purchased MacBooks with problems.

One of the plaintiffs, Zixuan Roa bought a new 15-inch MacBook Pro in January and had problems with the "B" key a month after purchase.

They also accuse Apple of suggesting "self-help remedies" (such as blasting the keyboard with compressed air) that it supposedly knows won't work, and noted that repairs haven't offered permanent solutions.

As typing is the console's essential contribution for the laptops, the offended parties contend that when a keys wind up stuck on the MacBook or MacBook Pro the machines, which cost upwards of £1,249, move toward becoming "unsuitable for its ordinary and intended use".

Apple wasn't immediately available to comment. For customers outside of the warranty period, Apple denies warranty service, and directs consumers to engage in paid repairs, which costs between $400 and $700.
