Gotham renewed for fifth and final season at Fox

Gotham renewed for fifth and final season at Fox

Despite all this, though, Gotham has a lucrative streaming deal, worldwide cache given its title/content, and comes from a studio in WB that FOX likely wants to keep a relationship with as they transition to a new phase. Producers Warner Bros. Television did not comment on the final season's exact episode amount, but they did have this to say about the season: "The fifth and final season will wrap up this unique origin story of the great DC Comics Super-villains and vigilantes, which revealed an entirely new chapter that has never been told". Therefore a low-priority slot late in the season wouldn't be a huge surprise, bar what impact that could have on FOX's relationship with WB.

The renewals came as FOX also canceled several of its fan-favorite dramas like "Lucifer" and "The Exorcist", and laid waste to nearly all of its single-camera comedies, including "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" (which has since been saved by NBC), "Last Man on Earth", and "The Mick". One thing the Batman prequel had working in its favor at the time was that Lethal Weapon was having trouble securing a new lead with a Monday deadline looming. Well, fortunately, the series has managed to secure a fifth season pick-up.

The renewal announcement comes just ahead of the "Gotham" season 4 finale, set to air on the network this coming week.

"The final season will focus on Bruce Wayne's transformation into the caped crusader", Fox said in announcing its Season 5 news. That includes watching young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) officially becoming Batman at last by series' end.

The network did not say how many episodes are in the order.

THR's Lesley Goldberg tweeted that per his sources, it appears that Gotham may still have some legs left for a final bout allowing the series to get syndicated thanks to its 100 episode benchmark.
