New Haven public schools to close at the end of school year

On Tuesday, May 15, both the Pennsylvania primary elections, as well as the New York State school budget and board member elections will take place.

While none of the school districts are attempting to pierce the state mandated property tax levy cap, there is some controversy surrounding a proposition that will appear on the ballot in the Southampton School District: a $5.2 million plan to purchase a Southampton Village home and convert it into administration offices.

Under the law, school districts can not raise tax levies more than two percent unless they achieve a super majority approval from voters. The caps limit annual increases in local school property taxes under a formula based largely on the inflation rate, and districts that keep within those boundaries have found it to be a sure path to success with voters.

Madison School Board members quashed a proposal Monday that could have allowed the board president to block other members from requesting information about the school district they are elected to govern.

On May 2, the Greene Board of Education voted to terminate two teaching assistants, a health teacher, a school social worker, a science teacher and a music teacher.

Remsenberg-Speonk residents will be asked to choose between two newcomers and one incumbent who are vying for two open seats on the School Board. "Since we have a surplus of schools, including space at existing charter schools, but a serious lack of affordable housing, that seems to me a better use of this land".

CLINTON - Clinton Central School has proposed a $27.9 million budget, calling for a slight spending increase and amount to be raised by taxes for school year 2018-19. With the receipt of some additional state aid combined with funds from our reserves, the budget gap was reduced to $400,000.

Lawyers representing one of the students on the East St. Louis High School track team have sent a letter to the school district Monday morning.

HOLLAND PATENT -Voters in the Holland Patent school district will decide on the district's $34.5 million proposed 2018-19 budget. School tax rates are set after the district receives the final tax assessment roll in August.

The proposed campus is for Arise's ERES Academy, a kindergarten through 8th grade school that is now housed in a building leased from a church about a mile and a half away.

In New Rochelle, the budget will need at least 60 percent of voters to approve the spending plan in order to pass.

Tuckahoe residents can cast their votes from 7 a.m.to 8 p.m.in the Tuckahoe School library.

The budget also calls for a 40 percent increase in the line item of curriculum and professional development to bring that figure from $89,000 to $123,000 - as well as the addition of a summer high school credit recovery/regents retake program.
