Volvo ditches diesel for all-new S60

Volvo's new plant in Charleston, South Carolina, isn't quite up and humming yet, but the company's next-generation S60 sedan, which is scheduled to be built there, will go without a diesel engine option.

The new S60 itself will be available with gasoline and plug-in hybrid powertrain options at launch, with middle ground mild hybrids following for the 2020 model year.

Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson is clear in stating that the company's future is electric and that it will no longer develop a new generation of diesel engines.

Volvo plans to phase out all cars with internal combustion engines alone in favor of gas hybrid power as it moves towards full electrification.

The revamped mid-size S60, to be unveiled in the next few weeks, will become Volvo's first model not featuring a diesel option, the Gothenburg, Sweden-based company said Wednesday. Volvo describes this plan as the most comprehensive electrification strategy in the vehicle industry.

Volvo S60 Polestar India Launched Front Fascia

Making a bold move toward achieving cleaner cars, Volvo Cars has announced that its upcoming new-gen Volvo S60 sedan will not have a diesel engine on offer.

A V60 wagon sibling to the S60 has already been revealed (and is shown above).

The S60 is set to be revealed next month and production for the saloon is set to start this autumn at Volvo Car's SC plant, which will be the only site to build the model.

Although diesels now emit more Carbon dioxide per kilometer than their petrol counterparts, Samuelson said hybridisation will help match figures achieved by diesels.

As for the auto itself, the new-gen Volvo S60 sedan is based on the company's versatile Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which now also underpins SUV and Estate cousins - the new XC60 and V60.
