There are always going to be hard, stressful periods in people's professional or personal lives and as a major employer within the legal sector, we believe it is important that people know that help is available for them during these critical times and they can seek support during any period of ill health, be it physical or mental.

"I think a lot of it has to do with how we approach it, and how we talk about it". The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that, "Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the USA - 43.8 million - experiences mental illness in a given year".

"We are also heavily involved in the training and education of Norfolk and Norwich staff, including at induction, and we promote the mental health and wellbeing of their staff".

The collaborative, profession-wide project, invites all law firms and other organisations to get involved to learn from and share best practice. A good job where we feel secure and supported can boost our mental health.

All of this work is underpinned by a significant financial commitment of £150 million over five years.

Mr Laybourn added: "People fear that opening up about their mental health will affect the way their colleagues or boss will perceive them - some even worry that this will have an impact on their career progression". Reducing stigma and raising awareness has been vital in making people less afraid to come forward when their mental health is deteriorating.
