Premier League stars miss out as France announce World Cup squad

Head coach of France Didier Deschamps presented the final squad for the world Cup in Russian Federation.

Yesterday evening, Didier Deschamps released a list of 23 players he will be taking with him to Russian Federation, with 11 others being held on a standby as back-up options if an injury occurs.

"Without his injury he would have been a serious candidate for the 23-man list", Deschamps said.

The former West Ham United player was forced off with a hamstring injury in the first half of Marseille's Europa League final defeat against Atletico Madrid Wednesday, and that fitness doubt persuaded Deschamps to leave him out of the 23-member final squad. The average recovery time for this type of injury is three weeks to be fit.

France boss Didier Deschamps has opted to select the likes of former Newcastle United flop Florian Thauvin in his place, therefore Martial can have every reason to feel aggrieved at his current situation.

Marseille forward Dimitri Payet (R) is comforted by a teammate after being defeated by Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Europa League final at the Parc OL stadium in Decines-Charpieu, near Lyon on 16 May, 2018.

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, who has a strained relationship with Deschamps and also missed Euro 2016, did not make the cut despite being regarded by many as the best French forward of his generation.

Les Bleus scored 18 goals and conceded just six in their World Cup campaign as they topped Group A with 23 points from 10 games.

The omission of Martial and Lacazette is an indication of the wealth of attacking options at Deschamps' disposal, with the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Chelsea's Olivier Giroud, who moved to Stamford Bridge from Arsenal in January, named in the squad.

Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny had already been ruled out of the tournament after suffering a ruptured Achilles.

"Two years have passed".

He explained: "They were good against Germany, but the whole team were. I have put my faith in players who have responded to that, and the squad comes before everything else", Deschamps said.

For an exit in the playoffs of the world Cup team France, being one of the main favorites of the tournament, will compete with Australia, Peru and Denmark.

They will then take on Italy in Nice on June 1 and the United States on June 9.
