Storm Alberto threatens Alabama with flash flooding

Storm Alberto threatens Alabama with flash flooding

Some spots along the gulf coast could be hammered with more than a foot of rain, but that's not the only concern.

Overnight, Subtropical Storm Alberto approaching the Florida panhandle slowed down to half its speed but didn't lose any of its strength, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The center of what was once Alberto is moving over northwest Alabama.

Alberto has 35 miles per hour sustained winds and the center is forecast to track north-northwest today and be located just to the west of Huntsville by 1 p.m.

It warned of life-threatening surf conditions, the possibility of a few brief tornadoes in much of Florida and parts of Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama.

Perry, Fla., has received almost 2 inches of rain since Sunday morning, and it will get much more, the NWS said shortly before noon ET.

The storm continued churning north through the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday and is scheduled to make landfall on the Florida Panhandle early Monday morning, reports CNN.

"Continued weakening is forecast as Alberto moves farther inland, and the system is expected to degenerate into a remnant low by Tuesday evening", the NHC said.

Trump and Abe to meet before North Korea summit
As well as Kim Yong-chol's visit, Kim Jong-un has also sent his de facto chief of staff, Kim Chang Son, to Singapore via Beijing. At the same time, a "pre-advance" team was traveling to Singapore to meet with North Koreans, the White House said.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released the annual hurricane season forecast Thursday in which they call for 10 to 16 named storms, with five to nine hurricanes.

At 1000 PM CDT (0300 UTC), the center of Subtropical Depression Alberto was located near latitude 31.4 North, longitude 86.2 West. The center of the storm will basically cut the state in half, with the east side of the state dealing with the worst of the impacts.

Subtropical Storm Alberto bearing down on Florida's coastline Sunday. Officials there are warning of risky conditions.

The Knoxville area has already seen one to two more inches of rain than normal this year.

"We got the flags out", Rice told the Northwest Florida Daily News as wind whipped a massive USA flag flying at half-staff.

Along the Florida Panhandle, tourists vowed Alberto wouldn't dampen their fun.

Alberto comes during the Memorial Day weekend, and is expected to affect travel on Monday, when many people will return from their holidays. Majority will be lighter in nature this morning, with afternoon showers or thunderstorms that develop containing potential for heavier downpours. The tropical system became a subtropical storm Friday, the National Hurricane Center said. "We'll hang out and see how it goes". Gusty winds have knocked out some power and there is local coastal flooding on the very storm surge-prone coast south of Tallahassee.
