Qualcomm reveals Snapdragon 850 chipset for Windows 10 PCs

The Snapdragon 850 is built with the "2nd Generation" of 10 nm and Qualcomm was not exhausted to mention that Intel is still on 14 nm and has troubles bringing 10 nm to the market.

Samsung wants to launch its Always-on, Always-Connected User Experiences and Katouzian believes that this partnership is very important for the future of always on, always connected Snapdragon-based PC.

Of course, the Snapdragon 850 is expected to be substantially better than the Snapdragon 835 that is now in use with Always Connected PCs.

As we reported few days back, Qualcomm today officially announced the Snapdragon 850 mobile platform for Windows 10 Always Connected PCs.

Technically, the Snapdragon 850 uses the same core IP as SD 845 SoC for smartphones. The company says that the Snapdragon 850 includes both hardware and software tuning to make it better at performing PC activities compared to the Snapdragon 845. Additionally, it can deliver better multimedia and graphics capabilities, with the new chipset also providing faster AI performance.

Microsoft and Qualcomm brought Windows 10 to the Snapdragon 835 past year to enable OEMs to build PCs that were always connected with Gigabit LTE connectivity. It's also touted to provide a 20 percent boost in battery life, up to 20 hours.

Both Aqstic and aptX are supported on the Snapdragon 850, offering smartphone-class audio processing for microphones and headphones, something is actually a step UP from traditional notebook offerings. The Snapdragon 845 uses two quad core configurations: A Cortex-A75 (branded as the Kryo 385 Gold) cluster clocked at up to 2.8GHz and a quad-core Cortex-A55 cluster (branded as the Kryo 385 Silver) clocked at 1.77GHz.

Qualcomm said the Snapdragon 850 will have enhanced entertainment features, too, including virtual surround sound, native DSD support, aptX HD, and 4K capture. Qualcomm only showed their big and clunky reference tablet running simple Windows app store games like Asphalt 8. The 10nm chip features Qualcomm's Kryo 385 CPU, Snapdragon X20 LTE modem, Hexagon 685 Vector processor, Adreno 630 Visual processing system, Spectra 280 Image Signal Processor and an AI engine. In Microsoft's case that will particularly focus on Cortana, though developers will be able to tap into chip level processing for their own machine learning requirements.
