Adds 20 more Premier League matches to line-up from the 2019/20 season

The online retail company have been rumoured for some time to be interested in entering football streaming and it was suggested that in the 2019-22 bidding process they would try to outbid Sky and BT due to this process being the first where the league opened up a package for livestreaming. And so will Amazon.

Amazon Prime Video has broken the hold of Sky and BT on the English Premier League by securing the rights to air two full rounds of 20 matches per season, including bank holiday fixtures, in addition to weekly highlights.

BT has purchased the one other outstanding package of rights left available, taking its total to 52 matches per season under the new deal.

Premier League Executive Chairman Richard Scudamore said Amazon was an "exciting new partner", and its Prime Video would provide "an excellent service on which fans can consume the Premier League".

Amazon's offering will be available via its Amazon Prime Video service and it is likely that the rounds of fixtures will take place over more than one day, giving the firm more bites at the cherry.

Sky will continue to show the most games after agreeing in February to pay 3.58 billion pounds for 128 matches a season for three years, including new Saturday evening fixtures.

On Sunday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called upon China to publicly acknowledge the "tragic loss of innocent lives" on June 4, 1989.

On a busy day of announcements at the Premier League's summer meeting, it was also confirmed that the "big six" clubs have won their fight to take a bigger share of the top tier's booming worldwide broadcasting revenue.

The announcement came at the league's annual meeting on Thursday which also saw clubs agree for the first time to distribute some foreign television revenue based on where a team finishes from 2019. Daniel Ives, head of technology research at GBH Insights, said the next 12 to 18 months were a "pivotal window" for digital platforms such as Amazon and Facebook to secure major sports rights.

The way Premier League rights are sold in the United Kingdom is complicated and not all games are available for broadcast.

These two remaining packages of rights were specifically created to appeal to the internet giants such as Amazon, Netflix, Apple, Facebook and Google as online streaming continues to rise in popularity.

The revenue from British rights is not distributed entirely on an equal basis with clubs given more according to league position and also the amount of times they feature on live broadcasts.

There are still a number of overseas deals to be completed but it is expected that the Premier League will double the #3bn it received in overseas revenue from the previous three-year cycle.
