Dr. Virginia Apgar celebrated in today's Google Doodle

Virginia Apgar would have been 109 today and is celebrated with a Google Doodle. She was born on June 7, 1909.

Born to a insurance executive, inventor and astronomer she was the youngest of the three children.

She chose to enter the world of medicine after her elder brother died of tuberculosis.

But she could barely spend two years into her surgery residency as the then Chair of Surgery at the institution persuaded her to switch to anaesthesia, an uncalled-for move that Columbia University termed "a reflection of the times".

They were from the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania, Mount Holyoke college and the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry.

Numerous schools that offered accepted medical education did not admit women at all.

She then trained at the nation's first department of anesthesia at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and interned at Bellevue Hospital in NY.

He went on to repeat that he did apologize to his family, Lewinsky and her family, and the American people for his actions. But I think - it doesn't mean I agree with everything. 'I apologised to everybody in the world, ' Mr Clinton added.

The doctor was the first woman to become a professor at the prestigious Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeon in 1949.

She became a leading figure in the fields of anesthesiology and teratology. She did so and, at 29, she became the sole practicing anesthetist at Columbia until the mid-1940s.

The Apgar score is the system that quickly summarizes health of very newborn babies against infant mortality.

This prompted the fiercely passionate physician to develop her score, which has a range of zero to ten based on a tot's condition. She was known for her invention of the Apgar score, which is a way to distinguish between the health of newborn child immediately after the birth. Through this method she found out that a baby with a poor rating could be resuscitated by oxygen and warming.

The animated doodle for Thursday June 7 shows a woman in lab coat documenting the movements of a newborn positioned atop the words "Apgar". An Apgar Score between 4 and 6 may mean some medical intervention is needed.

Apgar lived her life as a fiercely independent woman and never married. In her later years, she worked for March of Dimes, a non-profit founded by President Franklin Roosevelt that initially targeted polio but went on to focus on the prevention of birth defects.

"It's just that I haven't found a man who can cook", she said about not marrying, CNN reported.
