Trump falsely accuses Canada of burning down White House

French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau vowed on Thursday to confront U.S. President Donald Trump over his tariffs on steel and aluminum, which Macron called "unilateral and illegal".

And more: "Looking forward to straightening out unfair Trade Deals with the G-7 countries".

Nothing US President Donald Trump is doing will "make the world better, safer or more peaceful", German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas told the daily Süddeutsche Zeitung on Friday.

The US president sparred with both leaders over trade well into Thursday night, accusing the European Union and Canada of unfair business practices, and then resumed his polemic soon after 6am US time, complaining about Canadian dairy tariffs. "It will start first of all to hurt USA workers".

"The actual fact that we will have these discussions is good for our countries and good for the world", Mr Trudeau said, noting that there were other matters at stake besides trade, including ensuring global security and advancing gender equality.

Trudeau, for his part, said Trump's action would hurt American workers as well as Canadians. A senior US diplomat said her frequent demands annoy him, something he sees as taking advantage of the UK-US relationship.

Before departing for Canada, Mr Trump tweeted: "Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the U.S. massive tariffs and create a non-monetary barriers".

Mexico said it would impose import duties on $3 billion worth of us products, including cheese, bourbon, pork and others, making good on its threats that it would retailiate for USA tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau later said that those talks stalled because the Trump administration demanded a five-year sunset clause on the agreement.

Macron made initial headway in forming a public friendship with Trump, but has failed to sway the USA leader on any issue, while Merkel has been distracted by coalition negotiations.

Trump himself is reportedly unhappy at having to attend G7 on the eve of his historic meeting with Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced that Trump would be represented by Everett Eissenstat for the last sessions.

That move unleashed fury in the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations and prompted quick retaliation from Canada and Mexico and a promise from the European Union to do so as well, unnerving investors who fear a trade war that could derail the global economy.

The G7 groups Canada, the United States, Japan, Britain, Italy, France and Germany. The EU is also attending the summit.

Media reports of late have suggested Trump will be a reluctant visitor to Canada, given the summit's proximity on the schedule to next week's meeting with the North Korean leader.

The G-7 became the G-8 in 1997, when Russian Federation became a member along with Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, the United States, France and Japan.

The U.S. trade deficit, however, fell to a seven-month low in April as exports rose to a record high, the U.S. Commerce Department reported on Wednesday.

"It is evident that the American president and the rest of the group continue to disagree on trade, climate change and the Iran nuclear deal", Tusk admitted.

And since our allies are the ones with whom we have the most significant ties - economic, military, cultural - they're most often the ones who wind up being the target of his ire as he tries to isolate the United States from the world.

Macron made clear Thursday that the other six countries wouldn't hesitate to go it alone.

He told reporters: "Maybe the American president doesn't care about being isolated today, but we don't mind being six, if needs be".
