What to do if you suspect someone is suicidal

According to the CDC report, the number of suicides has increased by more than 30 percent in half of the states in the US, and more than half of the people who died by suicide didn't have a known mental health condition.

North Dakota had the highest rate increase at 57.6 percent, but the report found that the rate increased more than 30 percent in 25 states, including South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Kansas. Every state but Nevada saw an increase in suicide rates during that time, the CDC reported.

"Unfortunately, our data show that the problem is getting worse", CDC Principal Deputy Director Dr. Anne Schuchat said in a press briefing.

In 2016 alone, nearly 45,000 Americans aged 10 or older lost their lives to suicide.

She said she found it interesting in a tragic way that of those who committed suicide without a known mental-health problem, 55 percent died by firearm.

"Frankly, we need to start championing mental health, just like we championed cancer and AIDS years ago", Alice Jordan-Miles from the Indiana Suicide Prevention Coalition explained. "We want improved access to care and better diagnostics, but we think that a comprehensive approach to suicide is what is needed".

Men were not only more likely to die by suicide with no known mental health condition, but they were also more likely to die by using a firearm. "We can see suicide rates improve slower than the economy".

"The gun debate in the United States has been about the horrific school shootings, and we want to prevent those, but the vast majority of deaths from firearms are suicides", she says.

The latest report, released Thursday, found that 45,000 people died by suicide in 2018.

Nationally, the suicide rate has jumped by 25 percent in almost 20 years. Everyone can help by learning the warning signs for suicide and how to respond. The information on contributing factors reflect what family and friends told coroners and police in a subgroup of states participating in the CDC's National Violent Death Reporting System.

Note: If you or you're concerned a loved one is having suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK.

Suicide rates are up 31 percent over the last 15 years, and many employees, underpaid and overworked, are stressed.

Suicide is now the tenth leading cause of death in the United States.

Another commenter said: "I work in the funeral industry and see the impact suicide has on families, friends, and the entire community". And we need to destigmatize mental illness and suicide. "There is a constant reinforcement of this in their world every single day, making them very vulnerable to keeping their internal pain, thoughts, and struggles to themselves". "Someone who has had a suicide attempt, even if it's taking aspirin or a suicide attempt", he said.

"When you talk to them and they seem exhausted", Stamper said.

In both countries, suicide prevention efforts are shifting toward meeting people's needs before they reach crisis.
