In eye of storm, scant news of Trump summit in North Korea

While Kim and his delegation are now staying at the St. Regis Hotel amid heavy security.

But it is business as usual at Sentosa from Sunday to Tuesday, said a joint media statement issued by the Sentosa Development Corporation and the Singapore Police Force on Friday.

He was greeted by Singapore's foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, who posted a picture on Twitter of him shaking hands with Kim and the message: "Welcomed Chairman Kim Jong Un, who has just arrived in Singapore".

The top USA and North Korean negotiators had earlier emerged from a last-ditch meeting at the Ritz Carlton with pursed lips, and no sign of whether an attempt to narrow the gap between United States and North Korean expectations of what denuclearisation should look like, had worked.

"We appreciate your hospitality and professionalism and your friendship", Trump told Lee, whose government is forking out some S$20 million (US$15 million) to host the summit.

She said Sung Kim, the USA ambassador to the Philippines, who has taken the lead on policy negotiations with the North, was set to hold a working group with a North Korean delegation at 10 a.m. Monday.

Trump and Kim Jong-Un have both suggested they could also pursue a peace treaty to officially end the Korean War, which ceased because of an armistice signed in 1953.

Just meeting with Mr Trump will also give Mr Kim recognition as the leader of a "normal" country and as an equal of the USA leader.

Kim's summit with Trump has captured intense global attention after a turn to diplomacy in recent months after serious fears of war past year amid North Korean nuclear and missile tests. Kim also released a statement in September that said he will "surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged US dotard with fire".

"The dismantlement of all of its WMD and ballistic missiles will lead to a more positive future for all people on the Korean Peninsula and a chance of prosperity for the people of North Korea, who have suffered for too long".

It is unclear, however, under what terms North Korea would agree to in an effort to reduce its nuclear arsenal.

During the meeting, the officials also celebrated Trump's birthday.

But last month, Trump abruptly cancelled the Singapore summit, citing the "tremendous anger and open hostility" by Pyongyang.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Sunday that Trump's public show of frustration with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other allies was part of a larger plan.

Previous White House administrations had denied Kim, his father and grandfather, the "reward" of a face-to-face meeting with a sitting U.S. president. "And he has that opportunity, and he won't have that opportunity again", Trump said.

Trump continued to tweet angrily at Trudeau from Singapore, saying Monday "Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal".

"I feel that Kim Jong Un wants to do something great for his people and he has that opportunity". Create peace and great prosperity for his land.

Trump has had recent discussions with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping - who all have vested interests in the outcome - about matters he plans to raise.

If the North Korean leader does indeed agree to completely abandon his country's nuclear weapons programme, Trump is expected to ease sanctions on the hermit kingdom and pave the way for much-needed foreign direct investment in the country.

It has been used before for high-profile diplomatic occasions.

Dealing with Trump's whims and last-minute changes of mind has proven a procedural nightmare, political analysts said. Trump's proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum to stop the allies from taking "advantage" of the U.S.
