Rafael Nadal clinches 11th French Open title in ‘Claywalk’

As a result Nadal went three clear of Max Decugis as the most successful French Open champion in history with 11 titles at Roland Garros.

World number one Rafael Nadal beats Dominic Thiem 6-4 6-3 6-2 to lift the French Open title for an 11th time.

Despite his remarkable efforts, the 32-year-old remains three titles behind Federer, who will be targeting a 21st Slam win at Wimbledon next month.

On Sunday, Nadal will go up against Austria's Dominic Thiem, the eighth-ranked player in the world and someone who has defeated Nadal before.

Two of the Spaniard's 17 Grand Slam titles came on the All England Club's lawns, but the 32-year-old has struggled to make an impact there in recent years.

Taking on Nadal at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament is a whole other challenge. At one point finally, Thiem tried going around the post in the penultimate game, just after a Nadal cross-court backhand return seared so close over the net cord that it made the Parisians murmur. But after, the Spaniard was imperious. However, midway through the third set, Nadal incurred a finger injury which led him to immediately take off his wristband. At the following changeover, Nadal was given a salt pill by a doctor and had his left forearm massaged by a trainer. Nadal's had some challenges at Roland-Garros' championship stage over the years, but few athletes in any sport have ever been more acclimatized to a venue the way Nadal has owned the terra firma of Roland-Garros' grounds.

He became the first player to hold three major titles on three different surfaces at the same time when he won the Australian Open with a five-set success against Federer again.

Katherine Lam is a breaking and trending news digital producer for Fox News. No, no, no, I can't - I can't be always thinking of more. Throughout his 14 years competing here, Nadal has only lost two matches.

"You can't be frustrated always if somebody has more money than you, if somebody has a bigger house than you, if somebody has more grand slams than you".

According to Perrotta, Nadal has lost two Richard Mille watches that were stolen (one was later recovered) and almost lost a third when a fellow player found one in a locker room. You can't live with that feeling.

"But I never have been insane about all this kind of stuff". Earlier in the week Robin Soderling, who handed Nadal his first French Open loss in the fourth round in 2009, said the only workable strategy against the Spaniard was to be "really aggressive".

Thiem was considered the stiffest test for Nadal at the French Open and understandably so.

"I think today I played my best match of the tournament", Nadal said.

In the tie-break of the tournament, Djokovic trailed 3-0, then played a couple of stunning points to save match point and give himself a couple of set points, before losing 13-11.
